Looking Forward

The new year is a time when many make resolutions, goals to keep in the coming year. This isn't new, we've all probably made one or two over the years. We've also all most likely not lived up to those resolutions.
But I was reminded by a friend that, if we're honest, most often our resolutions and plans are more about us; instead should we perhaps reflect on the past year at God's faithfulness and look ahead to how we can best serve Him?
It is a convicting thought.
There's certainly nothing wrong with desiring to lose weight, read more, travel more, get a better job, start a good relationship, etc. But are we not tempted to make these plans without consulting God?
Of course, His Word has something to say about this:
"The mind of man plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps." - Proverbs 16:9
His Word also gives us some pointers on where our focus should be:
"Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God." - Colossians 3:1
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." - Matthew 6:33
In other words, for the sake of our discussion, how many of our resolutions are planned with the goal of seeking the things of God?
Instead of (or in conjunction with) traveling more, maybe resolve to evangelize more. Maybe consider discipling others, investing yourself in ministry more, serving more.
This can look different for different people I believe. Trying to be healthier so that you can better fulfill the demands of serving your family and others is a good goal. Reading more Biblical literature is a good goal, etc. Though I'd caution to not just 'tack' those ideas on to make yourself feel better.
Ultimately the point is simple: seek God first. We all need to be about this.
So as you look to this new year, think on God's faithfulness, and earnestly desire to follow His lead in this coming year. Let the resolutions and goals you make reflect that.
May it be a year of fruitful labor for the Lord, and may He bless you greatly in it all!
