The Story The Sun Tells Us

The sun rises over the ocean, as clouds gently move overhead, and the waves crash below.

Rays of the rising sun burst through stormy-looking skies. The bright red, orange, and yellow hues shine strikingly against the dark blues and grays of the clouds.

Meanwhile, drivers, seemingly unaware of the glorious display above, hurry their way to work, weaving in and out of traffic, pushing the speed limit as much as possible, and rushing through yellow lights. Instead of gazing at the beauty of the sky, visors are lowered to block out the sun's brightness

This was the scene the other morning on my way to my day job. And I found myself almost lured into that same mindset. I have to get to work on time, rush, rush, rush.

But how much is lost in the hustle and bustle of life? How much of God's glory do we simply ignore? Do we find ourselves more annoyed by the brightness of the sun than we are amazed at its beauty?

Yet, the sun does not relent just because of our obstinacy. It carries on its course, doing the bidding of its Maker day in and day out. Sometimes it is hidden from sight by rainy days, or, of course, during the night. But it shines again as the clouds scatter; it rises again the next morning, clearing away the darkness.

The sun really tells a story, does it not? Scripture even tells us this:

"... In them He has placed a tent for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices as a strong man to run his course. Its rising is from one end of the heavens, and its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat." - Psalm 19:4c-6

And why does the sun do this? Of course, we can answer that with: "That is how God made it."

But Psalm 19 begins with the powerful phrase:

"The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands." - Verse 1.

The sun does exactly what God determined for it to do, and in so doing, it testifies to His greatness.

But, so often, we're merely too busy to notice.

While the sun speaks gloriously, yet without words, its testimony alone cannot save. Even so, will man be held guiltless for ignoring its story?
